The City Chamberlain's duties and responsibilities are varied. The main function of the office is the collection and custody of all public funds belonging to or handled by, the City. The Chamberlain collects all City and County taxes, water and sewer rents, and special assessments. In addition, all earnings from the various City departments go through the Chamberlain's Office.

Accurate records of all taxes, both paid and unpaid, on each parcel of property in the City are maintained by the Chamberlain. On, or before, December 1 of each year, the Chamberlain holds a tax sale on the unpaid properties and bids them in for the City. At this time the owner of the property has two years in which to pay those taxes before the property becomes acquired by the City.

At the request of property owners, attorneys, and abstract companies, the Chamberlains's Office provides a ten-year search of a property. This is a legal document prepared and certified by the City Chamberlain, to which the seal is affixed. Each day the total business transactions are totaled, proven, and deposits are prepared for the funds to be deposited into the City's accounts.
