History
The Oneida Police Department was formed before 1894, when Oneida was a village. Initially it was staffed with a chief and five patrolmen. It was housed in a small building on Vanderbilt Avenue across from the former central fire station
In January 1901, the department moved its quarters to a building on Phelps Street that had originally been occupied by the Fire Department. At that time, the Police Department consisted of six officers, working six days a week, twelve hours a day. In 1934, to comply with eight hour work-day legislation, the number of officers increased to fourteen. In 1946 eighteen officers patrolled the City. In 1968, the department moved into its present quarters in the Municpal Building, and in 1969 saw the staff increased to twenty-two Officers. The City currently has twenty-two officers.
The department has progressed with the times and is now equipped with and trained to use computers, modern communications equipment, and electronic devices to meet their commitment to the community.
The Oneida City Police Department's shoulder Patch
has
changed over the years to the present patch shown at the left.
The center of the patch is the Madison County Historical Society
building which is located on Main Street in Oneida. The
year the department was establish is included on the new patch.
